Sim Racing

Postby Heckers » Mon Jun 09, 2014 9:18 am

Recently i have become very interested in racing simulators.
Last week I went out and bought a racing wheel, the Logitech Driving Force GT as it came highly recommended as a starter wheel.
Also got myself a copy of Assetto Corsa and started racing.
A couple of things i noticed very early.
1. This aint no Gran Turismo, you really need to drive properly here. I am enjoying the challenge :)
2. The driving Force GT works and all, but man it feels nothing like a real steering wheel. I can feel the gears grinding inside and it almost feels like the thing is broken and will burst apart sometimes with all the rattling.
3. Sitting on a chair and desk gets really uncomfortable, really quickly. My back gets sore, the pedals move around, the chair is on wheels....just a mess.

So.....first point is just a matter of putting in time and getting better...
Anyone else got a Driving Force GT? Does it feel the same for you?
Who has a racing rig? Any ones you can recommend or maybe you did a DIY version with wood or pvc?

I am a very competitive person so i will probably get into the whole iRacing thing at some point, who else is playing it?

Welcome to Sim racing.

I also started out with a DFGT. It rattles a lot and thats the area the more expensive wheels tend to show their worth in. For example, my current Thrustmaster T500 is very similar to the G27 in accuracy, but the T500 shines as it does not clank. It rolls off and onto bumps, like a normal car would. The DFGT is not bad though. Many very successful sim racers use it exclusively and not due to the lack of funds.

A DIY rig might be good. I know some people over on the GT side have designed a rig schematic made from the white plastic piping used by plumbers (is it called PVC?). I've got a G-Force sim rig which is made locally (CPT) and is very affordable. However I believe Playseat is the most comfortable, but a bit more expensive.

I still play iRacing. I've not found an alternative that is as accurate yet and the multiplayer is far great.

Hey. I see you are playing iRacing :) How is it?

BTW, the MX-5 Cup car tends to be the quicker of the two due to gearing.

That Mazda is the worst thing I have ever driven in any game ever. Forklifts have a more solid rear end.

yeah lol. I like it when I spin out due to throttle oversteer, not lack-of-power oversteer XD
